SEIZED DRUGS SLIP INTO THE MARKET: PAC REPRIMANDS FDA
The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC) has reprimanded Management of Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for their negligence which resulted in seized drugs finding its way to the market.

This came up at the PAC public sitting on the Performance Audit Report of the Auditor-General on the activities of the FDA for the period 2010 to 2013. The report revealed that FDA left seized medicines in the warehouses of offending importers or pharmaceutical companies against World Health Organization guidelines.

Responding to a question, the Ag. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FDA, Madam Delese Mimi Darko said the FDA does not have a warehouse to store seized medicines and therefore had to detain them at the clients’ premises under lock and key. She assured that the Authority is building a facility for the purpose.

The Committee however directed the FDA to, as a matter of urgency, rent bonded warehouses to hold detained medicines at the expense of the defaulting companies.

The Committee also queried the Authority for allowing medicines to arrive at the ports before issuing import permits contrary to its own guidelines on drugs importation. The CEO assured the Committee that the ongoing port automation system will address these lapses.

The PAC urged the Authority to strengthen its collaboration with other security agencies to stamp out the entry of drugs through unauthorised routes into the country.
